How has Media further Influenced Globalization
Globalization is a term that many use in their daily lives for various aspects of life. Basically, Globalization is a term used to describe how trade and technology have made the world into a more connected and interdependent place. Globalization also captures in its scope the economic and social changes that have come about as a result. It may be pictured as the threads of an immense spider web formed over millennia, with the number and reach of these threads increasing over time. People, money, material goods, ideas, and even disease and devastation have traveled these silken strands, and have done so in greater numbers and with greater speed than ever in the present age. People travel many places in their life and explore new things in life. Traveling has become common in the current era and globalization has made many things possible for everyone. Globalization is a very important key for our advancement in any and all aspects of life. For example, Amazon shopping is a very good example for indicating that advancement in technology all over the world has led to a drastic change in the way people shop now a days.
The usage of media has bought about many changes to the way people now see the current world. A very big example of this is “Instagram”. Instagram is now a very popular and influential mode of communication all around the world. Instagram now has over a billion subscribers and earns around $18.16 Billion(Statista 1). Due to its popularity and influence on the current society, people want to look good, eat good, travel more and show all the good aspects of their life to everyone on the platform. For instance, as I am an international student from India which has different cultural diversity than US, I try to show my friend, family how US is to all who haven't been or traveled to the US. If this is in control, it is good for me and my family. But if this showing off gets out of hand, it can cause a lot of trouble to me and my family. If this happens, they may spend all their valuable time in such social media platforms which might affect their grades adversely and all the parents hard earned money and their time will go to waste. This can also sometimes push people to an edge where they might even commit suicide which is too much for the family to bear.

Another super influential social platform is “Youtube”. Everyone knows what Youtube is and what it performs. Youtube is so popular that the most viewed video has around 9.57 Billion views whereas the current world population stands at 7.9 Billion(Statista 1, world population clock 1). There is about 1.67 Billion difference between the world population and the most viewed Youtube video(Baby Shark song). Why is there such a huge difference between the count? People are getting so much addicted to the online stuff that people created second accounts for several reasons like to increase their subscribers so that they can make money, fame/popularity, etc. Why do people even bother about such things when they are not going to make a living out of what they are doing and waste their time on silly activities. Having good reputations in the society is very important and I agree with that but just social reputation doesn’t help you family or you. People tend to get attracted to what is more fancier than what is more important. Many youtuber’s have made a living by just creating video content but not many have the potential to be like them.
Paytm is another social media platform that has many users. Paytm is an online transaction platform where people can send or receive money from different people around the world. It is one of the largest startup companies in India. Paytm is just like GooglePay, PayPal and others but mostly used in India. This app has made many peoples life much more easier and affordable. You don’t need to visit a bank every time to do a transaction. We could transfer money to anyone anytime. But as they say, everything has its drawbacks. As peoples bank accounts are linked to the app, hackers can penetrate their firewall and have access to your bank account details and can use all your money at their will. Due to this, people lost thousands of dollars and we may/may not be able to catch the culprit behind this. Paying in-person has no such drawbacks other than the fact that it is not always accessible. Due to the drawbacks of online transaction, people around the world do illegal activities such as hacking to make a living. This new medium of social platform has affected many around the globe and has started the technological era.
Have you ever wondered why exactly do we need globalization to grow? Why has media evolved into a superpower? We all have such questions in mind and are seeking for a proper and reliable answer. In my opinion, globalization helps the world grow together, help each other with solve their problems. Globalization plays an important role in our daily lives like the kind of education we study, different practices we follow(cultural or logical). For instance, I am from India and follow various practices that the outside world might not even know. I studied in one of India’s national board(CBSE) which covered many topics that are currently being covered in my undergraduation at ASU. Because the Indian board is a little advanced in this area I am able to keep up with the studies here. Whereas, if a student comes to ASU for undergraduation and has never been taught the topics that are currently being covered, he has to work very hard to keep up with the class and to score good grades. Globalization has helped the world with providing the most useful topics for a particular major before hand so that students study only what is necessary. Watching Youtube videos of other experts from all over the world can help the student immensely.
Media has many meanings now, we call journalists and the studio as media, different ways of communication through media and etc. Globalization is the process by which people get to know one another and help each other in any way possible. And technology has made it possible for everyone. A person siting in California can solve problems like terrorism faced in Afghanistan. Through technology people are able to communicate with each other whenever they want. Export, import, food, MNC’s, etc are all the results of globalization which made peoples life much more simpler efficient. Now people with a certain skill can work in a different country where his skill is the most needed. There are endless ways globalization with the help of media has made the world we now live a better place to live happily. Unfortunately, the happiness is not for all involved in this. Globalization brought about many changes in our lives, some are good for few and some are bad for few. For example, due to the import and export business, local weavers have taken a massive hit on their income and are unable to feed their families. Importing and exporting has helped a nation to increase its GDP and customers are satisfied with many options to pick from but many families are going to fall onto the roads and thus might potentially lead to people committing crimes and suicide. And all of this is a result of globalization and media.
Finally, I would like to conclude by saying that globalization has been happening for many years and will continue to happen in the coming future. Globalization has helped many countries to solve their problems and help each others mutually.Media is medium by which people express their feelings, desires and their daily practices to others around the world so that they can recognize their people. As I’ve mentioned earlier, Youtube, Instagram, Paytm are one of many ways through which people learn, communicate with each other. The current technology has made many things possible now that were not even possible to imagine. Media has further influenced globalization and is a good sign of progress for all of us. But we have to limit ourselves so that we do not go out of hand and cause trouble to others. If people are able to restrain themselves from taking advantage of technology adversely, then globalization will make our world a better place to live.
